Aspen Medical is seeking qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Nurse Educator – Acute and Critical Care. The Acute and Critical Care Nursing Educator at Aspen Medical Fiji plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare delivery in high-pressure environments, such as emergency departments and other acute care units at Ba Hospital. This position is not just about imparting knowledge but about fostering a culture of clinical excellence and continuous improvement. By developing and delivering comprehensive education programs, the educator equips nurses with advanced skills, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities that are essential for managing complex patient cases in acute and critical care settings.

In addition to training, the educator will spearhead initiatives that bring about tangible improvements in clinical practice. Through the integration of evidence-based practices and international patient safety standards, the educator will ensure that nurses are not only knowledgeable but also capable of delivering care that meets the highest standards of safety and efficacy. This proactive approach helps mitigate risks, reduce medical errors, and improve patient outcomes.

The roles and responsibilities of this position include:

  • Design and implement education and training programs that focus on acute and critical care nursing, incorporating elements to build clinical expertise, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
  • Develop programs aimed at fostering nurses’ abilities to assess, plan, and execute clinical interventions in rapidly changing environments.
  • Lead orientation programs for new nursing staff in acute and critical care, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills and confidence to manage complex patient cases.
  • Incorporate both theoretical knowledge and hands-on training, including clinical simulations, to ensure nurses can apply critical thinking in real-time situations.
  • Lead initiatives to promote change in clinical practice based on the latest research, evidence-based guidelines, and quality improvement projects.
  • Work closely with clinical leadership to identify areas for improvement in current nursing practices and develop strategies to implement these changes effectively.
  • Educate nurses on how to critically appraise research and integrate findings into their clinical practice, ensuring continuous improvement in patient outcomes.
  • Conduct competency assessments of nursing staff in acute and critical care units, focusing on their ability to apply critical thinking, clinical decision-making, and evidence-based practices.
  • Provide on-the-job coaching in acute care areas, helping nurses develop strong decision-making skills in high-stakes situations, such as patient deterioration, emergencies, or life-threatening conditions.
  • Design clinical case studies, simulations, and problem-solving exercises to reinforce critical thinking and decision-making skills among nurses.
  • Collaborate with the quality improvement team to ensure nursing practices in acute and critical care settings align with patient safety standards and JCI accreditation requirements.
  • Lead quality improvement projects focused on enhancing clinical decision-making and critical thinking in patient care.
  • Participate in clinical governance activities, ensuring nurses contribute to and lead efforts in improving care delivery and patient outcomes.
  • Act as a mentor to nurses, guiding them in developing critical thinking, decision-making, and leadership skills to advance their professional careers.
  • Encourage and support nurses in achieving professional certifications in acute and critical care specialties, fostering a culture of lifelong learning and professional growth.
  • Promote participation in external training programs and conferences that enhance clinical expertise in acute and critical care nursing.
  • Collaborate with the nursing leadership and multidisciplinary teams to align educational initiatives with organizational goals for patient safety and quality care.
  • Act as a clinical resource for acute and critical care nurses, providing guidance on complex cases and decision-making processes.
  • Lead by example, encouraging a culture of critical thinking, open communication, and continuous improvement within the nursing teams.

 

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • A bachelor’s in nursing (or equivalent) with a valid registration and practicing license with the Fiji Nursing Council
  • Minimum of 10 years working in the clinical field of nursing preferably in critical care
  • Proven experience and working knowledge in all aspects of Nursing
  • Strong foundation in acute and critical care nursing with a focus on building critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills
  • Ability to drive change in clinical practice through education and mentorship
  • Proven experience in clinical education
  • An understanding of adult learning principles and methods of evaluating training programs
  • Proven experience and comprehensive understanding of the registered nurse’s scope of practice, Fiji Nursing Decree and the Nurses Code of Conduct
  • Broad knowledge and experience on quality improvement systems and implementation
  • Ability to conduct training needs analysis, evaluate training programs and compile a training plan
  • Ability to make professional and timely clinical judgement and decisions
  • Excellent report writing and the ability to communicate effectively
  • Capacity to utilise computer programs to support the operations of the unit
  • Expertise in creating educational programs that integrate evidence-based practices with practical decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and mentorship abilities to inspire and guide nursing staff
  • Proficiency in using clinical education tools, including simulation technology and e-learning platforms
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic healthcare environment
