Description

Aspen Medical is seeking qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Nurse Educator – Maternity. The Maternity Educator at Aspen Medical Fiji plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring that the nursing and midwifery staff are well-prepared to handle the complexities of maternity and neonatal care. This position is essential not only for routine childbirth management but also for preparing healthcare staff to respond effectively to high-risk pregnancies and obstetric emergencies, such as preeclampsia, postpartum haemorrhage, and neonatal resuscitation.

The Educator’s role extends beyond clinical instruction; they serve as advocates for patient-centered care, ensuring that the care provided aligns with the individual needs of each mother and newborn. By promoting a collaborative approach, the Maternity Educator fosters teamwork between multidisciplinary teams, which is vital in high-stakes maternity environments.

In addition to patient care, the Maternity Educator ensures compliance with both national standards, such as those set by the Ministry of Health in Fiji, and international guidelines, such as those outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Joint Commission International (JCI). This compliance is not only necessary for accreditation purposes but also for improving maternal and neonatal outcomes.

By focusing on continuous professional development, the Maternity Educator helps create a culture of safety, quality improvement, and innovation within the maternity department, ensuring that staff are equipped with up-to-date knowledge and the skills to adapt to evolving healthcare challenges. This leads to better patient outcomes, reduced maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, and alignment with global best practices in maternity care.

The roles and responsibilities of this position include:

  • Develop and implement training programs covering all aspects of maternity care, including prenatal, labour, delivery, postpartum, and neonatal care.
  • Conduct workshops, simulations, and skills assessments to improve staff proficiency in managing normal and complicated deliveries, obstetric emergencies, and neonatal resuscitation.
  • Provide ongoing education on pain management options, breastfeeding support, and cultural competence in maternity care.
  • Regularly assess and evaluate the competencies of maternity and neonatal nursing staff through clinical observations, skills checklists, and performance evaluations.
  • Ensure all staff maintain up-to-date certifications in neonatal resuscitation, basic life support (BLS), and advanced obstetric life support (AOLS) as applicable.
  • Provide one-on-one coaching and mentoring to nursing and midwifery staff, particularly in areas where performance improvement is needed.
  • Promote the delivery of patient-centered care that focuses on effective communication, patient education, and emotional support throughout the childbirth process.
  • Train staff in techniques for improving patient engagement and satisfaction, including postpartum care and patient education on infant care and breastfeeding.
  • Ensure that all maternity care practices are aligned with current evidence-based guidelines, including labour management, caesarean sections, postpartum haemorrhage management, and neonatal care.
  • Regularly review and update maternity policies and protocols to reflect the latest clinical research and best practices.
  • Lead efforts to standardize care processes in the maternity unit, ensuring consistency in patient care delivery.
  • Conduct regular drills and simulations to prepare staff for managing obstetric and neonatal emergencies, including maternal haemorrhage, eclampsia, shoulder dystocia, and neonatal resuscitation.
  • Ensure staff are well-trained to quickly and effectively respond to emergencies in the delivery room and neonatal care areas.
  • Collaborate with obstetricians, neonatologists, anaesthetists, and other healthcare professionals to promote coordinated and comprehensive care for mothers and newborns.
  • Facilitate regular multidisciplinary meetings to discuss complex cases and develop care plans for high-risk pregnancies and neonates.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives in the maternity unit aimed at reducing complications and improving maternal and neonatal outcomes.
  • Monitor patient safety indicators and work with the quality and safety team to address any issues related to patient care or clinical processes.
  • Encourage and support nursing and midwifery staff in pursuing advanced certifications in maternity and neonatal care.
  • Organize professional development opportunities, including conferences, workshops, and online learning, to ensure staff stay current with developments in maternal and neonatal care.
  • Ensure that all maternity care practices meet national and international accreditation and regulatory standards, including infection control, documentation, and patient safety requirements.
  • Work with the accreditation team to prepare for external audits and ensure continuous compliance with healthcare standards.
