Description

Aspen Medical is seeking qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Registered Midwife. The Registered Midwife provides comprehensive care to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. This role involves assessing and monitoring maternal and fetal well-being, managing labor and delivery, providing postpartum care, and offering support and education to new parents. The Registered Midwife works collaboratively with obstetricians, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the health and safety of both mother and baby.

The roles and responsibilities of this position include:

    • Conduct comprehensive assessments of pregnant women, including medical history, physical exams, and diagnostic tests.
    • Monitor maternal and fetal health, identify potential complications, and implement appropriate interventions.
    • Provide education on prenatal care, nutrition, exercise, and childbirth preparation.
    • Monitor and support women during labor, managing pain relief, progress of labor, and emotional support.
    • Assist in or conduct vaginal deliveries, ensuring the safety of both mother and baby.
    • Recognize and respond to obstetric emergencies, including performing resuscitation or other life-saving procedures if necessary.
    • Evaluate the physical and emotional well-being of mothers and newborns during the postpartum period.
    • Offer support with breastfeeding, newborn care, and maternal recovery.
    • Educate parents on postpartum care, infant care, and family planning.
    • Conduct initial assessments and routine checks of newborns, monitoring for any health issues or complications.
    • Assist with breastfeeding and provide guidance on infant feeding and nutrition.
    • Maintain accurate and detailed records of patient assessments, care plans, and outcomes.
    • Update electronic health records (Tamanu) promptly and accurately.
    • Adhere to infection control protocols, safety guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
    • Identify and report safety hazards, errors, or near misses, and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
    • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team regarding patient status, care plans, and treatment goals.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, and handover reports.
    • Keep up-to-date with current midwifery practices, evidence-based guidelines, and healthcare advancements.
    • Engage in ongoing professional development and continuing education.
    • Provide supervision and guidance to student midwives, nurses, and support staff.
    • Delegate tasks appropriately and ensure that assigned tasks are completed accurately.
    • Provide community education and support services related to maternal and child health.
    • Participate in research, policy development, and special projects as needed.
    • Participate in the development of a safe and healthy workplace and comply with instructions given in adhering to safe work procedures.
    • Take reasonable care to ensure own safety and health and that of others and to abide by our duty of care provided for in the OHS policy.
    • Any other reasonable duties delegated by management.

     

     

 

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • Undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in Midwifery.
  • Hold a valid annual practicing license and registration as a registered midwife with the Fiji Nursing Council
  • Sound knowledge and competence on obstetric and neonatal emergencies and neonatal resuscitation.
  • Experience in nursing at a major hospital, community health or similar nursing environment.
  • Sound knowledge of basic nursing principles and clinical practices
  • Excellent knowledge of operational plans and goals of midwifery services.
  • Good knowledge of the Midwifery scope of Practice Nursing Act (2011), Scope of Practice, FNC Code of Ethics and Conduct, Public Service Code of Conduct, Occupational Health & Safety Act, and relevant legislations
  • Understanding of the Fijian Constitution (2013) and applicable laws of Fiji.
  • Exceptional clinical nursing skills with the ability to care for patients using structured approaches within the scope of practice for registered nurses.
  • Ability to plan and manage the supply of pharmaceuticals and consumables.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient or client information.
  • Exceptional communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Well verses with computer skills and Microsoft 360
